Cookie policy
The short version
- Essential storage keeps the site working and remembers your cookie choice. It’s always on.
- Analytics (PostHog) is optional and off until you actively accept it. Before that, the analytics code isn’t even loaded.
- You can accept, reject, or change your mind at any time. Saying no never stops you signing up.
- If your browser sends a “Do Not Track” or “Global Privacy Control” signal, analytics stays off even if you click Accept.
- We don’t use advertising or social media tracking.
What cookies and similar storage are
Cookies are small files a website can save on your device. Local storage and session storage do a similar job inside your browser. This policy covers all three, because they work in a similar way.
What this site uses
Essential: always on
This is what the site needs in order to remember your choice. It doesn’t track you, and it doesn’t need your consent.
| Name | Type | Purpose | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
trahlo.consent | Local storage, set by us | Remembers your cookie choice: whether analytics is allowed, when you chose, and which version of our categories you saw. It stays in your browser. We don’t receive a copy. | Until you clear your browser data, or until we change our categories and ask you again. |
This is only saved after you make a choice. If your browser blocks storage, your choice applies to that visit only. Signing up for early access doesn’t set any cookie or storage of its own.
Analytics: optional, off by default
If you accept analytics, we use PostHog to understand how the site is used, so we can improve it. PostHog sets the following on your device. The part after ph_ is our public PostHog project key.
| Name | Type | Purpose | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
ph_<project key>_posthog | Cookie, first-party and tied to this site’s own address only (not shared with other subdomains), set by the PostHog code running on this site | Holds a random identifier and session details so repeat visits can be counted. | 365 days (PostHog documents this) |
ph_<project key>_posthog | Local storage | Holds the same identifiers and settings. | No expiry is set. It stays until it’s cleared, and we clear it if you withdraw consent. |
ph_<project key>_posthog, ph_<project key>_window_id, ph_<project key>_primary_window_exists, ph_<project key>_session_registered_properties | Session storage | Lets PostHog recognise your current visit in this browser tab. | Until you close the tab, or until you withdraw consent. |
PostHog’s documentation doesn’t describe each of these names, so the purposes above are in general terms.
If you accept analytics, PostHog receives:
- the pages you view (address and title), where you came from, and any campaign tags in the link you used, such as
utm_source; - when you leave a page, how long you stayed and how far down it you got;
- clicks on links and buttons: which link or button, by its text and where it points;
- page-speed measurements (“Web Vitals”);
- your browser, operating system and device type, screen size, language, time zone and the browser’s user-agent text;
- the random identifiers above; and
- one event when you sign up, with a yes-or-no value for whether the marketing box was ticked.
It never receives your email address or anything you type. The sign-up form and the cookie controls are excluded from click tracking, and anything that looks like an email address is removed from the data before it leaves your browser. Advertising click identifiers in links (such as gclid and fbclid) are masked.
We don’t use session recordings, heatmaps, surveys, feature flags, or profiles of individual visitors, and we don’t try to identify you. If your browser sends a “Do Not Track” or “Global Privacy Control” signal, we treat that as a refusal: PostHog isn’t downloaded and nothing is stored or sent, even if you click Accept all.
PostHog acts for us as a service provider (a “processor”). We send the data to PostHog’s EU Cloud address, eu.i.posthog.com. PostHog says its EU Cloud data is stored in Germany and that traffic passes through Cloudflare’s network. Your browser’s connection necessarily shows your IP address to PostHog’s servers. Our PostHog project is set to discard IP addresses instead of storing them. See the privacy notice for what the providers say about transfers and how long PostHog keeps events.
Your choices
When you haven’t chosen yet, a panel headed “Your privacy matters” appears at the bottom of the page. It offers:
- Accept all, a filled coral button, turns analytics on.
- Reject non-essential, an outlined button, keeps analytics off.
- Manage preferences, a plain text link, opens a panel with a separate Analytics switch. The switch starts off. Essential storage is always on.
The two buttons are the same size and sit side by side, so refusing takes one click, just like accepting. They are not equally eye-catching: Accept all is the more prominent of the two. We don’t pre-select analytics. Scrolling, clicking elsewhere, pressing keys or closing the preferences panel never counts as consent, and nothing optional runs until you choose.
If you reject analytics, or ignore the panel, everything on the site still works, including signing up.
Changing your mind
Open “Cookie settings” in the footer of any page, or use the button below, whenever you like, and switch Analytics on or off.
Withdrawing consent
Switch Analytics off, in the same place you switched it on. We then stop sending analytics data and remove PostHog’s cookie, local storage and session storage from your browser straight away. Withdrawing consent doesn’t affect what was collected before. To have earlier analytics data deleted, email hello@trahlo.com. You can also clear or block cookies and site data in your browser settings. If you do, we’ll just ask for your choice again.
What we don’t use
We don’t use advertising cookies, social media tracking, or other third-party scripts on this page. The font is hosted on our own site. Links to our Instagram, TikTok and YouTube profiles are ordinary links, and those platforms set their own cookies only if you visit them.
